I met Rafael a little over three years ago when my friend Sarah introduced us.

He caught my attention scaring people at cabins. The relationship was mainly shelved in my closet until recently, except for a trip to Mexico with my friend Mary for my 40th birthday. It’s been impactful to see what he is made of during this difficult time. Turns out there is a lot more to him than hot air.

“Rafael got anxious this morning when I told him I’d be gone for about 5 hours today. I explained it was spinal tap Tuesday. I told him they’d probably allow him into the hospital since he can be disinfected, but he is such a coward when it comes to needles he declined. As I packed my bag for the day he threw his arms up and yelled, ‘why can’t we just fucking have tacos today instead?’ I told him it is because we have bigger things to work on like seeing the rest of the world.”
